FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – Kyle Van Dyke tossed a two-hit shutout and also homered as Moorhead defeated Detroit Lakes 10-0 in the championship game of the Minnesota Division I, District 9 American Legion baseball tournament on Saturday. Tyler Schlotfeldt and Sam Grantham each had three hits for the Blues (23-17-1). Schlotfeldt drove in three runs. “We played errorless defense,” Moorhead Blues coach Jeff Miller said. The Blues had 40 hits and scored 28 runs in their three games in the tournament. “We just hit the ball well the whole tournament,” Miller said. Moorhead advances to the Division I state tournament, which starts Thursday in Burnsville, Minn. The Blues will face the District I champion at 10 a.m. Moorhead has won nine of its last 11 games entering state play. “We’re playing really well right now,” Miller said. “This is a good time of the year to be playing well.”

The Blues faithful applaud a 3-6-3 (Penner-Rahman-Penner) double play that stopped a potential Detroit Lakes rally in the middle of the District 9 Championship Game.

Tuesday night between games of the Blues - Fergus Falls double header Moorhead American Legion Post 21 honored three distinguished people involved with the baseball program.
Halvor Johnson - long time business manager and lover of the game served in this role for 25 years often taking tickets, running the concessions and chasing down foul balls. Credited with naming the teams, the Blues & Golds were created giving the teams more defined identities based on the colors of the Moorhead Post 21. Halvor was inducted into the Minnesota American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986. At the ceremony accepting the recognition was Mrs. Eris Mae Johnson and their son Tom.
Joe Baker - got involved with the Moorhead Blues in 1986 when help was needed
driving a van to games and then became a fixture with the program becoming acting business manager and continuing that role to the present time. Joe was inducted into the Minnesota American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000.
Bucky Burgau - coached the Blues from 1973 to 1999 compiling an 883 - 407 win- loss record and winning the Minnesota State Championship and Central Plains Regional Championship in 1988. Bucky has shaped Moorhead baseball and countless youth baseball players lives over his years with the Moorhead Blues and his number 22 was retired in his honor.
If you would like to leave a message or share some of your memories playing or working with the honorees click on this link and type them a message: honoree message
Notes to the honorees:
I was honored to be part of the festivities honoring these three men. I played for Bucky on what he always jokes as one of his best teams (1979) and one of his worst teams (1980). I have also had the opportunity to learn alot of baseball on the field and the off the field approach to the game as I was an assistant coach to Bucky in 1996. Bucky is a mentor and true friend of mine as I continue my coaching in the great tradition of the Moorhead Blues. I was also priviledged to have Halvor as our manager while I played. I will never forget after we won the 1979 district tournament in New York Mills, Halvor fed us a steak dinner at the Erie Jr in Detroit Lakes. I also remember how he would tell us he was going to fine us $1 in meal money if we went in the field with our shirt untuck or pockets hanging out! I am not sure if he ever did this or not! He was a great man for mentoring our young minds. Joe Baker is a man who has dedicated over 20 years to this great program. He has done a great job in assuring the teams have the best gear, bus travel, meals, and logding. Also making sure the legion will support the most competitive schedule possible. He is a true patriot to the Moorhead Blues baseball program. Slick - Jeff Miller (1979-1980)
I actually pitched for Bucky and got his 200th win on a trip to Montana. I will never forget when he sat next to me on the bus and whispered it to me. Lots of great memories. - Brad Schmidt (1974-1976)
I will never forget the small entrance gate at Matson Field in 1973, we had an old tractor with a mower deck that barely fit through that gate. I know because I measured the space on each side of the mower as the tractor went through. One of our pitchers Huotari would drive that tractor full throttle right through that gate everyday at practive to go get snacks at the Courthouse. I was amazed he never crashed that thing... Bucky
